Paul Raslavicus, M.D.
For President - Elect 1999-2001
College of American Pathologists
June 28, 1999
Dear Colleagues,
During the last week of July, you will receive a mailed ballot for the
election of governors and President-elect of the CAP. We urge you to caste
your vote for Paul Raslavicus, MD, of Massachusetts, for President-elect.
Paul has been active in the governance of the CAP for many years, rising
through the ranks from Committee chair to Council chair to Board of
Governors, and to Secretary Treasurer for the past six years. Paul is an
individual who personifies for us the leadership and dedication to our
profession that required to lead the College in the next five years that
this term of office involves. He has worked for our economic benefit for
many years, and is responsible for our current system in surgical pathology
and the recent recognition of physician payment for pap smear
interpretation. Some of Paul's particular strengths include:
- POSITIVE VISION of the future of pathology with respect to its
relationship to both clinical and academic practice. Paul believes in the
expansion of our sphere of influence so that pathology remains an integral
part of the practice of medicine.
- EFFECTIVE ADVOCATE for pathologist's economic well being in a very
difficult environment. He is the individual who is most responsible for
having brought to us favorable payment terms for our services under Medicare
for surgical pathology and with HCFA for physician interpreted PAP smears.
- PROMOTER OF COLLEGE PROGRAMS such as LAP (he was a past state
commissioner), the Surveys program, forensic pathology programs and
especially SNOMED. Paul has been a frequent and eloquent speaker on the
College's behalf both within the College and in other forums.
- BROAD EXPERIENCE IN BUSINESS aspects of pathology. Paul is a co-founder of
a regional reference laboratory (now reorganized as Mayo Medical
Laboratories-NewEngland). He has an M.S. in Health Administration. He is an
officer of a large IPA, and practices pathology within a four community
hospital health system in north suburban Boston.
- EDUCATOR AND INNOVATOR: As past Director of Clinical Laboratories at
University Hospital, Boston, Paul pioneered bringing business and management
training into clinical pathology residency programs. He has held
appointments at all three Boston medical centers and currently is Clinical
Professor of Pathology at Tufts.
- CONSENSUS BUILDER for the varying practice settings of pathology, Paul has
personally experienced many of these practice modes. Besides Pathology
Boards in AP/CP, Paul also is board certified in blood banking,
dermatopathology and nuclear medicine.
Paul is widely regarded as a person of integrity and is respected by
colleagues who work with him. He has been there when we needed him. He needs
our vote now.
Sincerely yours,
The AIPNA Executive Committee.
