Acceleration of villous maturation.
Increased number and prominence of the villous cytotrophoblastic cells.
Hypovascular villi, with abundant syncytial knots and increased stromal collagen.
Trophoblastic basement membrane thickening (ɯ% of villi).
Atherosis of maternal arteries: Fibrinoid necrosis of arterial wall with intramural accumulation of lipid-laden macrophages and perivascular lymphocytic cuffing. Basic lesion, unknown pathogenesis.
