DUCTAL REMNANTS IN EXTRAHEPATIC BILIARY ATRESIA (Chandra R., Altman RP. Journal of Pediatrics, 93:196-200, 1978).
Three types of ductal remnants of the porta hepatis in EBA:
- 1.Type I: Single relatively large duct with the lumen measuring greater than 150 microns.
- 2. Type II: Single to numerous clusters of microscopic ducts each measuring less than or equal to 150 microns.
- 3. Type III: Dense fibrous tissue without any recognizable lumen in it.
Analysis of 34 patients with EBA s/p hepatic portoenterostomy (Kasai procedure).
Correlation between lumen size and post-operative establishment of bile drainage: 5 patients with type I ducts, 18 of 21 infants with type II ducts, and 1 in 8 with type III ducts showed bile drainage after the surgical procedure.
