EXTRAHEPATIC BILIARY ATRESIA: ETIOPATHOGENESIS
Conventional view: INH represents reaction to hepatocyte injury, and EBA represents congenital malformation resulting from lack of canalization.
Hypothesis of Infantile Obstructive Cholangiopathy (Landing, 1974): INH and EBA constitute a spectrum representing lesions due to the same basic disease process involving either or both the hepatocytes and bile ducts.
Etiology: Unknown; Reovirus type III may be etiologically related to IOC.
