EXTRAHEPATIC BILIARY ATRESIA: HISTOLOGIC FINDINGS
Bile ductular proliferation in the portal triads: Essential for diagnosis of EBA, although it is not specific. Possible mechanism: toxic action of retained bile products.
Bile plugs in some of the bile ducts.
Bridging portal fibrosis with or without septa formation.
Diagnosis can be made in about 93% of cases.
Wedge biopsy gives better results than needle biopsy.
Occasional cases: Overlapping pathologic findings of EBA and INH.
