PLEUROPULMONARY BLASTOMA: MICROSCOPIC FINDINGS

TYPE 1:

• Cyst lining: Ciliated respiratory or pseudostratified cuboidal epithelium, without atypia.

• Septal stroma: Bland fibrous tissue or compactly arranged primitive small cells.

• Enlarged cells with rhabdomyoblastic differentiation can be seen.

TYPES 2 AND 3:

• Type 2: Both epithelium-lined cysts and solid nodules.

• Type 3: Solid tumor; cystic areas secondary only to hemorrhage and necrosis.
